Inclusion Requires Meaningfully Including ALL Students

October 12, 2018

By Jill

As a student growing up with a physical disability, I was often wheel-chair bound.  I have, first-hand, experienced exclusion based on my inability to access my school.  Not only did my family have to bend over backwards to get me to school (one time my step-brother literally put me, in my wheelchair, into the back of a pick-up truck to get me to school), but I also lacked opportunity.  I never got to take shop class, because I was not able to “safely” use the machinery.  I was not able to go to the playground, because there were no paved paths to get down the hill.  I missed science labs, school dances, and formative components of the average middle school experience.

In NYC, 80% of schools are inaccessible to students with physical disabilities.  Kids like me are missing out each day.  Check out this recent report by the NY Daily News, ”

We can do better than this for our kids, NY!
